NACD would like to thank everyone who participated in the 2017 Summer Conservation Forum and Tour in Altoona, Iowa, last week. Two press releases went out during the summer meeting and are available here in NACD’s Newsroom. The second of those releases announced the 2017 urban agriculture conservation grantees.
This year, NACD’s Urban Agriculture Conservation Grant Initiative will help 19 conservation districts in 14 states implement projects that support local food production, provide opportunities for education and stewardship, and protect natural resources. In other news, last night the Senate voted to confirm David Bernhardt as Deputy Secretary of the Interior. Bernhardt may have several assistant secretaries joining him at the Interior Department soon, although there’s been no movement on a Bureau of Land Management director nomination.
This month’s Did You Know? is all about NACD’s new branding guidelines and logos. To better serve our district and state association members, NACD has updated its logo to the blue and white version currently featured on NACD’s website. This new and improved logo doesn’t have the color gradient or yellow hue that made printing and embroidering our past logos difficult.

NACD REGION MEETINGS ON THE HORIZON
Three NACD region meetings will bring state conservation leaders together during the month of August to educate, strategize, and network.
The South Central region meeting in Alexandria, Louisiana, will take place August 2 to 4. Conservation leaders from Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana will meet to discuss the upcoming farm bill, Louisiana’s natural resource concerns, and prescribed grazing in longleaf pine forests. The Southeast region meeting will take place the following week, August 6 – 9, in Greenville, South Carolina. Held in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, the Southeast meeting will include a partnership roundtable discussion on the variety of issues affecting the region. The Northeast region meeting will be held in Burlington, Vermont, August 13 – 15. Registration is open for this event, which includes a panel discussion on the regulatory and voluntary conservation roles of districts, conservation tours on stormwater projects, and a dinner cruise on Lake Champlain. Senate Agriculture Committee member and Appropriations Committee Vice Chair Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., has been invited to speak as well.
NACD hits the road to participate in 72nd Soil and Water Conservation Society conference
NACD will be active in several sessions at the SWCS conference hosted from July 30 to August 2 in Madison, Wisconsin. Bill Berry, NACD communications specialist, will present as part of a 90-minute symposium on the Resource Stewardship Evaluation Tool from 3:30 to 5:00pm on Monday, July 31. Also participating in the symposium will be NACD Soil Health Champion Dan Diaz of Lena, Illinois, who will talk about the results of his recent Resource Stewardship Evaluation.
On Tuesday, August 1, an NACD/American Farmland Trust project on conservation district involvement in water quality trading will be the topic of a 1:30pm presentation, and NACD’s partnership on a soil health research project with Datu Research will be featured during a 3:30pm presentation.
Other NACD staff attending the meeting include CEO Jeremy Peters, Director of Projects and Partnerships Rich Duesterhaus, and Northern Plains Representative Laura Demmel. More information on the conference can be found on their web page.
ASSOCIATION OF FLORIDA CONSERVATION DISTRICTS brings conservation leaders to Ocala
120 enthusiastic conservationists from across the state of Florida gathered in Ocala last week to attend the 13th Annual Meeting of the Association of Florida Conservation Districts. The meeting kicked off with a conservation partnership roundtable discussion, highlighting current issues affecting conservation efforts across the state and how all members can work together to ensure success for all.
Throughout the meeting, the attendees identified water quantity; local, state, and federal budget cuts; and the lack of adequate funding as top concerns. NACD President Brent Van Dyke (pictured above with NRCS' mascot Sammy Soil and NRCS state conservationist for Florida, Russell Morgan) and NASCA Executive Director Mike Brown spoke to districts in attendance and advised them to pursue local conservation coalitions and nontraditional partnerships to improve their outreach. NACD's Southeast Representative Phylis Vandevere presented on parliamentary procedure, fundraising, and urban agriculture conservation.
